project overview
An all-star lineup including Eric Clapton, Madonna, Alicia Keys, Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz, Norah Jones, Mick Jagger and David Bowie, The Dixie Chicks and Sarah McLachlan slipped Between The Covers to benefit the T.J. Martell Foundation, which supports research on leukemia, cancer and AIDS. Created and produced by Paul Katz, founder and CEO of Commit Media, the disc brings together for the first time thirteen inspired cover versions of all-time classic songs by some of the music industry's greatest songwriters and performers. Between The Covers was released by SONY BMG in the U.S. and Nettwerk in Canada. VH1, VH1 Classic and VH1 Logo aired a half-hour Between the Covers special hosted by actor/director Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael, and regularly rebroadcast the show. The Bacon Brothers perform their rendition of the Beatles' "If I Needed Someone" on both the VH1 special and the album.

The T.J. Martell Foundation began with a promise. In 1975, T.J. Martell asked his father, music industry executive Tony Martell, to raise a million dollars for the lifesaving leukemia research that had made it possible for T.J. to reach his twenty-first birthday, beyond all expectations. T.J. died later that year but Tony Martell, with a group of music industry executives, artists and friends, vowed to keep the promise he'd made to his son and began organizing fundraising dinners and events. Since then, the T.J. Martell Foundation has raised more than $215 million to support innovative research on leukemia, cancer and AIDS at eight laboratories throughout the United States.
"We at the foundation are absolutely thrilled with this very special CD. For the past thirty years the T.J. Martell Foundation has been committed to raising funds for cutting-edge innovative research into the treatments and cures for cancer, leukemia and AIDS" said Tony Martell. "We know a cure is in sight - - and with projects like this CD, our goal comes closer to reality."
stellar commitmentThe Bacon Brothers not only host the VH1 show but also perform their contribution to the album, a cover track of The Beatles' "If I Needed Someone."
"We were honored to be included on this record, and to help out the TJ Martell foundation. This is an old George Harrison song that we use to warm up with. We love the song and it shows what a great writer George was. So we started doing it live and ended up recording it." -- Kevin Bacon
"Being a part of Between the Covers is special to me, because it draws attention to a great cause. The work that the T.J. Martell Foundation does is unparalleled, but funds for research are always needed. Hopefully this album will help to drive further awareness to the cause as well as funds to help those in need. I hope people will find some old and new favorites on the album." -- Sheryl Crow
